Workshops
Following the success of workshops at past IEEE International Conferences on Healthcare Informatics (ICHI), we cordially invite you to submit a workshop proposal to ICHI 2027, to be held in Washington, DC, USA, June 21–24, 2027.
Workshops are an integral part of ICHI 2027 and will be held on June 21, 2027, ahead of the main technical program. Workshops may be planned for a full day or a half day and should address topics relevant to healthcare informatics.
The ideal ICHI 2027 workshop proposal will focus on a timely and emerging topic and attract a strong set of high-quality contributions that spark discussion in an informal setting. Organizers determine the workshop format, which may include paper presentations, poster sessions, invited talks, panels, or any other activity that fosters interaction and discussion. Organizers of accepted workshops will be responsible for soliciting and reviewing submissions, planning the workshop program, and running the workshop.
Suggested Topic Areas
Workshop themes may draw on any area of the ICHI 2027 technical program, including:
- Analytics: AI/ML and generative AI for decision support and prediction; safe and trustworthy AI in healthcare; medical NLP and information retrieval; interoperability, ontologies, and data integration; smart and connected health; population health and surveillance analytics; visualization and data quality.
- Systems: In-home and continuous monitoring; healthcare cybersecurity and privacy; electronic health records and health information systems; clinical workflow; health systems modeling and simulation.
- Human-Centered Computing: Patient engagement and experience; human-AI interaction and usability; mixed-reality and interactive health technologies; health service delivery; information needs of consumers and clinicians; assistive and ubiquitous computing.
Submission
Each workshop proposal should include the following information:
- Organizers: Names, affiliations, and email addresses; designated contact person; organizers’ background and prior experience organizing similar workshops.
- Topic: Abstract, theme, rationale, issues to be addressed, goals, relevance to ICHI, and any previous workshops this one builds on.
- Audience: Target audience, communities addressed, and anticipated number of attendees.
- Publicity: Planned measures to announce the workshop and attract participants; envisaged follow-up activities, if any.
- Workshop Structure: Length (half day / 3 hours or full day / 6 hours), tentative program, and activities planned to foster interaction and communication.
- Reviewing: Planned review process and program committee, if applicable.
- Call for Papers: Tentative call for papers including workshop deadlines. If the workshop has been held before, please describe any proposed changes and include its history (number of submissions, accepted papers, and attendees).
- Format and Length: Proposals must not exceed 4 pages, excluding references and organizer bios. Submit a single PDF by email to the Workshop Chairs with the subject line ICHI 2027 Workshop Proposal: [Workshop Title]. Proposals that exceed the page limit or do not follow these instructions may be returned without review.
- Attendance and Participation: At least one organizer of each accepted workshop must register for the conference and attend in person in Washington, DC. ICHI 2027 is an in-person conference. Limited remote participation, such as a virtual invited speaker or panelist, may be considered case by case and requires advance approval from the Workshop Chairs. Authors of accepted workshop papers are expected to present in person, and at least one author of each paper must register.
- Workshop Viability: The Workshop Chairs may cancel a workshop that does not receive enough accepted papers to support a meaningful program, shorten it from a full day to a half day, or ask organizers of proposals with substantially overlapping topics to merge. Organizers will be consulted before such a decision.
Workshop proposals should be submitted by email to the Workshop Chairs listed below.
- Shuxin Zhou, PhD, St. Francis College, Brooklyn, NY, USA (szhou@sfc.edu)
- Yi Guo, PhD, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA (yiguo@ufl.edu)
Reviewing
Proposals will be reviewed by the Workshop Chairs, with independent reviewers as needed. Workshops will be selected based on the timeliness of the topic, relevance to ICHI, potential to attract a sufficient number of participants, and potential to spark discussion and achieve impact in the research community.
Publication
All IEEE ICHI 2027 workshop papers will appear in the conference proceedings published by IEEE and will be available via IEEE Xplore. Successful workshops may also form the basis for special issues of the Journal of Healthcare Informatics Research (JHIR), subject to approval by the conference chairs and the journal’s Editor-in-Chief. Workshop papers should follow the IEEE Proceedings format.

Authors of full research papers may also be interested in the ICHI 2027 regular paper track.
